Trash Your Old Vision StatementChange is hard for many companies. We love to hold onto old things that we no longer use. One of the oldest things that no loner works in most companies is the company vision statement.

So, you have identified the old vision statement. You walked thru the steps on my other blogs or hired my team to come in and so a Spirit Strategy™ advance weekend.

Now what do you do with the old one? The answer is, it depends. Is your vision statement so old that nobody even remembers it? If so I would recommend do not dig up the gravesite and risk finding the skeletons. Simply get the marketing team focused on the new one, have a “roll out” part and celebrate the simple and easy new direction and the roles each person plays in making the vision come true.

If on the other hand you have a vision statement that people really are attached to I would do two things. First make sure those most attached to the old vision had a part in at least sharing their thoughts on what the new one should be. Second share the new vision statement with them personally before the roll out. This helps them to feel important and gives you the opportunity to answer their questions before the public debut.

A new vision statement is something that all levels of your company should be proud of. Taking the time to roll it out at a staff meeting or via a marketing event is a way to demonstrate the new passion and enthusiasm. Be prepared for the naysayers and be willing to help them see how their role with the new vision is changes for the better.

So often the naysayers say you dis-respect your founders when you change the foundation of the vision statement. I say, not true. If you continue to do what you’ve always done you will go the way of the dinosaur. In truth the very reason you update the vision statement is to honor those founders and make sure the vision and values they wanted to see comes true.

Release the old vision statement with honor and bring for a new one that provides for the next highest and best level of company success.
