He did not say, “I have a plan.”
What are you saying? Do you have a plan, or do you have a dream for your company or yourself? In my practice I receive regular calls where someone is looking to me for help with their strategic plan. Their teams or companies are stuck and can’t often figure out why. Dreams often die stuck in the need for a plan. Leaders can often loose track of the vision when the planning begins.
Today on Martin Luther King Jr. day I am reminded he did not inspire a nation with a plan. He inspired a nation with a dream we could see, feel, taste, touch and experience in his words. The man had a vision of things unseen. He did not know then where his dream would take him, and we as the torchbearers still do not know where his dream is taking us. And, we continue to walk. We set aside this day annually pause to ask, “What is ours to do to support Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream?”
We are now 18 days in 2016, how are you doing on your plans/intentions for 2016? They say it takes 21 days to change a habit or create a new skill. On January 1st was your goal a dream and now it’s stuck in the plan? How many times will you allow plans get in the way of dreams?
Life is a practice. Martin Luther King Jr. continued to practice every day of his life to refine that dream, to become it. On January 18 if your New Year dream has gotten lost in some other “plan” in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. this day, pick it up again.
The most successful dreams are not plans, they start with a vision, a feeling, a believing and an achieving just at Martin Luther King’s did.
Meditative coloring is all the rage right now, I happen to love it. It forces me to look at the page have a vision for the colors and combinations I want and no plan. How often do you give yourself permission to move with out plan? You simply would not write a plan for coloring. Meditative coloring is a metaphor for life, the more I practice getting out of my head about the outcome and into my heart to wander thru the process the better outcome I receive.
When you get in your car, program your GPS to your next destination when you make a wrong turn it doesn’t say, “Hey idiot wrong turn, go back home.” It says “Recalculating.” Martin Luther King Jr. programmed his GPS, God Positioning System, a meditative canvas that would become the art of his life and time after time he “recalculated”.
Are you ready to capture your dream, kill the plan, color your vision and re-calculate?
I work with CEO’s and executive leaders who are ready to put down the plan and capture the dream. It’s time to co-create clear vision and higher profits. Thank you Dr. King for the dream, the walk and for reminding us we all have a dream inside of us. Walk on!
